Organic Fruits, Vegetables and Meats are Better for Our Health

Nov 17th, 2011

Many people hear the term organic, but don’t really know what it means. Going green and going organic go hand in hand. Eating and giving our families organic foods have been proven to be healthier, better for the environment and promote safer growing and farming overall. If you weren’t aware of the benefits of going organic, you should definitely consider them.

Conventional farmers use anywhere from 2-12 pesticides in their crops. Residues of pesticides are left behind on fruits and vegetables. Some of some these have been found to trigger subtle changes in a child’s development and may lead to health issues including ADHD, autism and even cancer.

Crops on organic farms contain plants nurtured by soil on organic farms. Because the soil has not been tampered with, these crops produce fruits and vegetables that contain higher levels of important antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins. Also, eating organic you will avoid the intake of genetically engineered foods. These engineered foods were approved some 15 yrs ago but we have since learned they can lead to adverse human health issues. Organic farmers do not plant or use genetically engineered crops or seeds.

Many livestock farmers use a combo of hormones, drugs, feed supplements, and high-grain diets to get animals to grow faster, bigger and to produce more milk and eggs. These animals are put under extreme stress and often experience serious reproductive and other health problems. The NOP rule prohibits the use of nearly all synthetic animal drugs which leads to healthier meat, milk, dairy products, and eggs.

Organic fruits and vegetables more often than not have higher levels of flavor-enhancing nutrients as well as higher concentrations of water and sugars which rear tastier results. Plus, no artificial food colors or preservatives are added to any organic foods. This means your food tastes better from the very beginning and is wholesome and enriched with flavor.

Lastly farming is second only to mining on the list of the most hazardous occupations. Daily exposure to toxic pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals can pose risks for many people working on or living near farms. This risk is eliminated when using organic farms.

Although organic foods are more costly, it is worth the extra to eat organic foods whenever possible. Doing so will add to your quality of life overall.
